Where is Events by I Candy located? We’re based in Grand Rapids.
How did you get started?
I’m partnered with my younger daughter who got married 4 years ago. My background is graphic design and interior design. I decided I could design her wedding so I went out to look for things to rent because I knew that I could do the design part of it…and there was nothing out there. So I thought it was really a niche. I own a graphics design company that prints fabric, carpet, wedding invitations, etc. so it was just a good match.

What would you say is your specialty service out of all the things you offer?
We can do anything custom-made that anybody needs. From custom lampshades to custom runners. We can do everything and do it well from start to finish.
What type of evnts do you design for? Is it primarily weddings?
Primarily weddings but we design for all types of events.

What are your favorite flowers?
I like peonies, hydrangeas, and tulips…the type of flowers you could pick from your garden. I tend to like flowers that are more nature-like over ones that are more rigid.
Where do you get your flowers when you’re not designing with silks?
We actually work with local growers because we don’t have real flowers.

Who’s your favorite type of bride?
I like meeting all different types of people but its always nice to meet someone who knows what they want. Either way, I think we’re good at helping the ones that don’t know exactly what they want because not everyone is a visualist.

What is the style of your company?
Versatile. We offer so many different styles so I can’t really say one style. We accommodate every kind of bride for all styles from vintage to garden. I tend to like the more handmade outdoors type of things but we also have all kinds of “bling” too.

What are some of the most important questions couples forget to ask and how would you answer the questions?
Well, its more so things I would ask them like “what is your budget?” Knowing that, we can work within it because we work with all types of budgets. Its important to know that right from the beginning.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you and your daughter?
Well, people typically don’t know that my background is graphic design and I own a graphics company. I recently finished 4 floors of art work for a hospital. My daughter, Alex, is just as creative as I am. Some would think she follows after me because I’ve been a designer for over 35 years but she actually comes up with most of our ideas and has incredible vision.
