Bringing the Outside In – Planterra

Planterra wedding venue at a conservatory

What is Planterra, exactly? The Planterra Conservatory is a glass-enclosed botanical garden style of building. It contains numerous exotic plants and flowers and has lovely features such as our koi ponds, 60-year old Queen Sago Palms and the largest indoor living wall in Michigan. The Conservatory is operated by Planterra Corporation one of the leading interior landscape service providers in the nation and is owned by the Pliska family.

How many people can you accommodate for a ceremony and/or reception? We can accommodate 200 people, for ceremony and reception (strolling or plated). The Conservatory is a spacious 11,000 square feet but due to plants and other features the fire marshal has limited occupancy to 200 for events.

Do you have preferred caterers or can I bring in anyone I want? Signature menus have been crafted and designed specifically for Planterra and food service contracted exclusively through Planterra’s preferred caterer. Food and beverage menus are customized according to the tastes and requests of the client.

What are the fees associated with renting Planterra, and what does that include? We charge a facility fee which includes rental of the entire conservatory for up to 6 hours, use of our PA system, access to our gardens for breathtaking photography for up to 2 hours prior to the event, access to the “green room” which contains 4 vanities and a private bathroom, free wi-fi internet access, event set-up and clean-up. The rates are based on the day, Monday through Wednesday $1,950, Thursday $2,850, Friday and Sunday $3,950. We also offer all-inclusive ceremony-only packages at lower rates.

How does the conservatory look year round? The Conservatory is a filled with beautiful exotic plants and flowers year-round. However, we only offer the conservatory for formal events September through May because it is difficult to cool the space in the summer months. We are an especially breathtaking venue in the winter.

What do you love about hosting weddings and receptions? It is an honor to be the venue for such an important occasion. I enjoy the personal details that couples choose to do to make their occasion unique and special. I also love the life that it brings into our botanical wonderland.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about the space? The Conservatory building was imported from Belgium.

Rachael & Peter are Married! 07.02.2011

Ann Arbor, MI at home wedding coordinated by TwoFoot Creative

Rachael and Peter were married in the back yard of their house in Ann Arbor on July 2nd, 2011. The weather report that day was very scary: 100◦F with a weather alert for thunderstorms. However, the wedding was absolutely beautiful!

Day of coordination for an at home wedding in Ann Arbor, MI

Rachael and Peter are both highly talented and have exceptional artistic abilities (Rachel is a photographer!). Rachael was so stunning in her wedding gown with a single strap consisting of white fabric roses. Her veil was also uniquely designed to be an artistic statement. Peter tastefully complimented Rachael in his fashionably grey suit.

Dogs carrying the rings at a wedding ceremony

To make the wedding even more personal to them, their dog, Gryphon, carried the ring down the aisle! He did such a wonderful job!

Wedding day rain in a tent

Rain decided to join the celebration right after the ceremony, but that didn’t disappoint the guests for even a moment.

The guests were impressed by the centerpieces on their tables, which consisted of wild flowers from Peter’s back yard and books from Peter’s book collection. As you can see, it was a “green” wedding.

Wedding guest book with thumb prints

The guest book was also uniquely designed. It was a board with a tree, both of their dogs, and their names. Guests made the leaves on the tree by printing their finger prints on the branches, then signing it on the inside!

Thank you cookies

Rachael and Peter were both very enjoyable to work with. I was very happy to help out on their big day.

Congratulations again to Rachael and Peter!

Wedding MBA Conference Recap

Wedding MBA 2011

One of the perks of my job is being able to travel the US for various conferences and industry events. This year in September I tested out the Wedding MBA in Las Vegas, and it was a great conference! I will definitely go back in a few years!

Chandelier at the Cosmopolitan in Vegas

The hotels in Vegas are awesome, and the chandelier at the Cosmopolitan might be the most stunning I saw! Our first night in Vegas we attended a welcome party by The Knot – the food was fantastic, it was fun meeting new faces and seeing some familiar ones, and a great excuse to get dressed up and go out!

Sasha Souza presentation

I’ve seen Sasha Souza speak before, and once again she was a phenomenal speaker! I love getting inside other planners’ heads and seeing what they do, what they value and how they go about getting to know their clients and creating amazing weddings.

Brunch at Wicked in Las Vegas

Brunch at Wicked (at the Cosmopolitan Hotel) was just so amazing! I cannot describe how awesome it was, and how full I was by the end of it! My dad helped build the restaurant and wanted to show me some of the work they had done, and we stumbled into some outstanding food in the process!

Brunch at Wicked in Las Vegas

Next year, I will be going a new conference – either the Special Event or Catersource/Event Solutions as well as the Association of Bridal Consultants conference that I always attend in November. Being inspired is crucial!

Kristin & Eric are Married! 10.08.2011

Wedding at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor

It was a perfect day on October 8th, I don’t think Kristin and Eric could have asked for a more beautiful wedding day. It began at 10:30 am for TwoFoot Creative, as we arrived at the private residence of Kristin’s parents to begin setting up. We tied chair pads on the mahogany chivari chairs, set up linens, assembled a cupcake stand, and set up each table (napkins with donation inserts, water pitchers, and table numbers).

Wedding at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor

After we had finished set up it was time to head to the ceremony at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. The ceremony was beautiful and we had everything go almost without a hitch (transportation confusions left Kristin’s side without a ride, so we went with an uncle of the bride to pick them up). That was the only glitch of the day though – fortunately!

Live music during outdoor wedding ceremony

One thing that I love about the Gardens is they are ready to help out with anything. From printing out forgotten readings, handing out umbrellas to guests, and making sure that the guests were as comfortable as can be. It is so nice when we can all work together to make sure the bride and groom have their perfect wedding. The gardens make a great place for photography too and I know that Greg Fox got some wonderful pictures of Kristen and Eric.

The food was prepared by chef Brian Polycn from the amazing Forest Grill. Since the bride and groom love everything french it was a dinner of fine french cuisine, and I can tell you it was all Bon Appetit!

At home tented wedding in Ann Arbor, MI coordinated by TwoFoot Creative

I learned something new at this wedding: instead of a champagne toast they did Pastis, which is a french liquor (they said it tastes like black licorice) that is custom to toast at the beginning of a celebration.

Escort cards on a shutter

One of my favorite set up items for the day was an old shutter that they used to hang the place cards on. It looked so cute once we were done and the guests loved how great it went along with the fall theme.

Orange and white escort cards French country

Kristen and Eric decided to not do a traditional wedding cake so they did cupcakes instead. These cupcakes were from a bakery called Mannino’s and they were out of this world!

Card box as vintage bird cage

Because of it being a residence, it was tricky for parking. They hired Kerby’s Curbside to be the valet for the evening and this really helped guests a lot! They also offered a shuttle service.

Rustic french inspired table settings with copper pintuck linens

The florist (Tom Thompson) brought in the centerpieces that were so charming. Each centerpiece was a wooden box that was filled with fall colors, and with the brown linen it really finished the decor in the tent.

Napkins pocket folded with donation cards inserted

The evening was beautiful, guests dined on great food, we heard some beautiful toasts, and danced the night away with DJ Fast Eddie. It was so cute seeing the kids running around and enjoying the fantastic Michigan weather.

Fall wedding at home in Ann Arbor coordinated by TwoFoot Creative

You could tell all guests there were truly excited and happy to be at this beautiful wedding. TwoFoot Creative was so happy to be a part of this wedding and we wish Kristen and Eric all the love in the world!!

Engagement Season – Getting Started!

Fox Theater wedding Detroit, MI

Congratulations – you just engaged and now everyone is asking “when and where will the wedding will be?”. If you’re anything like me, I just wanted to get over the shock, excitement, and happiness (and off cloud nine) before I could even think of when, where, and how!!!

Yellow and white inspiration

The first thing I did was join the knot.com, which if you haven’t yet I recommend doing so. It helped with ideas, and the community boards are a great place to bounce ideas off of and chat with other brides to be.

Wiards Orchard wedding near Ann Arbor, MI

A few weeks into my Knot adventures, I clicked on the checklist; you know, the dreaded timeline for when things should be done by. The panic began to sink in, and I had no idea how I was going to get all of this done.

Ball of white roses bouquet

I know it looks like a lot and even though they try and help you by breaking it down by months, it still can be so overwhelming. I was a college student, full time worker, and trying to plan a wedding in less than a year. Trying to sleep at night was becoming impossible because the to do lists where running through my brain! I was dreaming about weddings (good and bad) – like will I fall while walking down the aisle?

Crystal and Orchid tree with hanging candles

To help you out we have decided to go through the planning checklist. The knot.com starts making suggestions 12 months out, so lets begin planning our October 2012 wedding!

Small vases with buds for wedding inspiration

1- Start on an organizational binder where you can keep ideas and stay organized. You need something where you can keep everything contracts, pictures, magazine clippings, and it will be good to have everything right there at your finger tips.

Card catalogs wedding inspiration

2- Start thinking about your wedding style, colors and themes. Do you want a formal wedding, or are you thinking that you would like a more casual wedding?

3- Decide on a wedding budget, everything adds up, especially all the little details.

4- Let everyone know you’re engaged by having a party, creating a cute greeting card, a newspaper announcement, or invite people to look at a wedding website you have created.

5- Pick a wedding date.

6- Interview a wedding coordinator; check out TwoFoot Creative! (Ana steps in and adds that this should be done between steps 1 and 2 if you want help throughout the planning!)

Gown Shop Ann Arbor

7- Start looking at wedding dresses, see what your style is and what it isn’t. That way when you go to try on dresses you can show them from your wedding binder (or Pinterest account) the style of dresses you like or don’t like.

8- The last thing on the 12 months + list is getting in shape. For those of that don’t have to lose any weight, lucky you!! But for the rest of us… if you think you want to lose some weight start now. That way you don’t have to try to lose 20 lbs in 2 months!

Chandelier in an old building

Finally, try to enjoy this time. I know thinking your wedding is a year or more away may seem like such a far away date. But it will go by fast and make sure you cherish every moment with your fiancé. Have fun calling him or her your fiancé!!! I know I sure did… Congratulations on your engagement!! And come back for more planning tips as the months get closer. We will help you tackle those monthly to do lists.

Planning a Wedding at Michigan Stadium

View from suites at Michigan Stadium for wedding reception JLB photography

As a follow-up to my post a while back about the Big House being open for weddings now, I wanted to show some more pictures and go into more detail on logistics and pricing!

Entrance for a wedding at Michigan Stadium

As guests arrive, they will be parking their own cars (complimentary) or you can hire a valet service to park them for you. The parking is right outside the entrance to the Tunnel and Suites, which is where they will enter for a ceremony and reception respectively.

Wedding ceremony on 50 yard line of Michigan Stadium

For a ceremony on the Block M, you are looking at $6000 and an hour window for the actual ceremony to take place. Guests will walk down the tunnel to their seats, which are right on the field!

Getting ready for a UM Stadium wedding in the locker rooms

Your bridal party will get ready in the locker rooms! The visiting locker room is available as well, so ladies can be separated from the men, and you’ll have all the room you could ever need.

Tunnel entrance for wedding ceremony at Michigan Stadium

This is the view as you walk from the locker rooms down the tunnel toward your wedding ceremony!

Tunnel entrance for wedding ceremony at Michigan Stadium

For an additional fee, you can have a banner (probably for the guys to run through), a fly-by, your picture(s) on the jumbo-tron, the Michigan Marching Band, and many other bonuses!

Elevators at Michigan Stadium

After the ceremony (wherever it may take place), guests will enter the Stadium Club and take a manned elevator up to the 4th floor (or the 3rd, if you prefer that space!). The reception fee is $9000 and includes security, parking, tables and chairs.

Cocktail hour at Michigan Stadium

Cocktail hour might include live music and displays of food for your guests, and some fun things to do such as a photo booth or caricature artist! During this time guests can watch you take pictures on the field through the glass windows, or catch up with friends and family.

Reception at Michigan Stadium suites

Once guests are all seated, the grand entrance might lead into toasts and a welcome, followed by dinner service.

Dinner at Michigan Stadium

The four approved caterers at the Stadium are Katherine’s, Opus One, University Catering and Sodexo.

Bar at Michigan Stadium

They would also provide the service staff and bartenders – but you can purchase your own alcohol.

Sweet Heather Anne desserts

Once dinner ends, dessert might be served or available at a decadent sweets table! Dancing will get started, and you and your guests can party the rest of the night! For an additional fee you can have the lights turned on in the Stadium for an excellent view of the field as well.

Katy Jackson-Hepner special events coordinator at university of michigan athletic department

Katy Jackson-Hepner will be your on-site contact in the Athletic Department at UM. TwoFoot Creative is currently planning a 2012 Stadium wedding reception and she is wonderful to have on our team as we go through the logistics involved in a Big House wedding!
