Weddings at UMMA (the University of Michigan Museum of Art) are among my very favorite. I truly don’t know how people do it without at least a day-of coordinator! There are so many moving parts, and to expect a caterer to do it all seems very unrealistic. They do have plenty of rules to follow, but they’re all in place for a good reason. Protecting all that artwork is number one on their list!

Weddings at UMMA

Setup at the museum starts at 4pm sharp. We often do a 5:30pm ceremony on site. Then flip the space during cocktail hour in the Forum, which gives us about 75 minutes. In that time we move chairs out of the way, bring in tables, linens, and all other rentals, and get moving! Tables go down, get straightened, and covered with linens. On top of tables we have to place chargers, flatware, glassware, centerpieces and table numbers. The caterer will often add a b&b plate, salt & pepper, and any other items necessary for service.

If a band is involved, they have the same short window for setup. This is not ideal for bands, but thankfully we work with great people willing to make it happen. Often they don’t have time for a sound check because guests are not far away and no one wants to be around for that! My favorite band setup is against the front doors on a stage, with a curtain behind them. That way all the wedding professionals can hide out behind the curtain to eat dinner as well!
