Q&A With Ana at TwoFoot Creative

Melanie thought it would be a good idea to interview me for a blog post. So I indulged her, and here are the results!

When did you know that you wanted to be a wedding planner? I was at UM for a Masters in Sport Management, and took several business classes throughout the year that I just loved. I knew I wanted to start a business, but I didn’t figure out exactly what kind until I started planning my own wedding in 2006.

What’s your favorite moment of a wedding day? When everything is completely set up and ready to go, and the couple can walk in and see everything they have been planning for so long come together even more beautifully than they had pictured.

What is something about you that will surprise everyone? I lived in Norway for 7 years and speak Norwegian fluently.

How did you come up with the name TwoFoot Creative? My husband nicknamed me TwoFoot when I was a distance runner at UM – I attempted the steeplechase but failed miserably. There is a water jump that you are supposed to clear, and every time I landed with both feet in the middle of the water and got soaked!

What are your dreams for your company? I want to plan events across the country, and bring my favorite team of wedding professionals with me wherever those might be. I would also love to build the perfect wedding venue.

What’s a tip for other wedding planners getting into the business? My best move was to join the Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) right away, go through their educational track, and network with as many established planners as possible. I also attended the annual conference my first year in business, which was a true eye opener!

How far in advance do couples start booking a wedding with you? I started booking 2013 in January, and right now I am booked pretty solid for 2012.

Best tip for a bride or groom to be? Bring someone in to help you out at least the day of. It is very hard to be the star if you’re trying to direct the show!

What wedding package do you sell more the full, partial, or day of? My Ruby package is by far the most popular. It gives couples enough help to make the planning process easier and more manageable, and fits into most budgets.

ABC at the Townsend – Getting published in The Knot!

Recently the Detroit and Ann Arbor local networking groups for the Association of Bridal Consultants got together on a fabulous meeting at the Townsend Hotel in Brimingham. The event’s focus was on getting published in print and online media, specifically The Knot. A big thanks to the photo editor for the The Knot magazine and the speaker for the evening - Rebecca Crumley. If you are interested in getting your wedding published, contact us to see what will make it Knot-worthy!

Spotlight on a Venue: Grand Rapids Art Museum

Museums are one of the most sought after venues for weddings. They offer a such a creative environment for your guest to enjoy being surrounded by art and history.

This September, our West Michigan/Grand Rapids team will have a wedding at the Grand Rapids Art Museum for the first time. The GRAM is located in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. It has more than 10 areas where your event can be held.

Our couple will have their ceremony in the starlight Cook Auditorium followed by a Reception in the beautiful Wege Pavilion. The GRAM has such a wonderful staff who make the planning process a great experience. I’m so excited about this wedding and I look forward to planning more events there in the future!

Humane Society of Huron Valley

What is HSHV and what do they do? Founded in 1896, HSHV serves Washtenaw County, Plymouth, and Canton. Our mission is to promote compassionate and responsible care of animals in our community. We shelter homeless and abused animals, have a highly successful adoption program, protect victims of animal cruelty and prosecute their offenders, provide low-cost spay/neuter, and provide other innovative prevention and education services.

HSHV ended 2011 with another record-breaking save rate of 81.5% (not just a “personal best”, but a rate that brings us near the top nation-wide). We were honored a second year in row by for having the highest save rate of any shelter like us Michigan by the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance. We received another 4-star Charity Navigator rating meaning we are accountable and transparent.

And in all, we helped over 13,000 animals last year with some form of mission-related services through the hard work of 68 employees and 700 volunteers.

How did you decide to get involved in weddings? We started getting requests from brides for an in lieu of gifts option. They were also looking for a unique way to show their passion for animals at their receptions. HSHV offers wedding tents in lieu of favors. Each tent features a beautiful photos and stories of adoptable animals of the couple’s choice. HSHV also has personal fundraising web pages that can be used in wedding registries as an in lieu of gifts option. On that page the couple can describe what their wedding will be like and why they chose to donate to HSHV.

Where does the donation go once it is sent to you? The donations are quickly process and used to fund several of our life-saving programs. Many of our programs are funded 100% by donations from generous community members, including our Cruelty Investigations and Bountiful Bowls Food Assistance. We are not funded or affiliated by Michigan Humane Society, The Humane Society of the United States or any other animal welfare group or government agency. All humane societies are independent and serve different areas.

What does it cost to run the HSHV? It cost $4.6 million annually to run HSHV.

Choosing a Color Palette

Why do we think of a two color palette? There are so many different shades and complimentary colors that is a shame that we don’t use those colors also to add another dimension to our weddings. Think of your wedding style, and take in consideration your venues’ existing colors and styles so your colors don’t clash with them. Pick one dominant color and then look at the different shades of colors. If you can get your hands on a Pantone book you can play with the different shades as well as complimentary colors, or head to your local fabric store and get some swatches to see the different hues.

Each month we are going to show you different samples of colors that go together to give you some ideas. And since we are always talking about using different avenues to get inspiration for your wedding, we found these in Better Homes and Gardens; you can get inspiration everywhere!

Our first color combo is called Golden Olive and Tobacco Brown. I decided to start with these colors because they are bright and remind me of summer! This is an example of complimentary colors, and then to compliment them they have added a yellow, orange, and pink. The extra colors just blend together and will add that pop you may be looking for.

Do you use all of these colors? You definitely could, or you could pick two or three. It’s up to you; the complimentary colors to the Olive and Brown are just for you to throw in there to add depth to your décor. They could be the color of flowers, the extra details you add in, maybe linens, cake colors, or different shades of bridesmaid dresses.

Your choices don’t always have to be different colors they could be a different shade of the same color, which we will be showing you in future posts as well. I hope this may get you thinking, if you have any questions call us at TwoFoot Creative we love thinking outside the box and have some great ideas just waiting for you!
